Adult Education and Family Literacy Week 2011

September 14th, 2011

GED students, this is your week! The National Coalition For Literacy has campaigned to officially highlight Adult Education and Family Literacy this week. Please take a moment and reflect on the role literacy plays in your life. Working with GED students has shown me that literacy can mean the world to an individual. It is amazing the amount of self-confidence that can grow from developing skills in reading and writing. Adult students, I cherish the moments when you experience success and light up from within. Your success inspires me!  Just imagine how inspiring your accomplishments are for your family, especially your children. Do you want to know more about how literacy can affect your life? The following facts are taken directly from the National Coalition for Literacy website:

What is adult literacy?

Adult literacy is defined as:

Using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.

Why is adult literacy important?

Literacy skills impact every aspect of adult life. Adults who are more literate are more likely to:

  • Read to their children and discuss school topics;
  • Be employed full time and receive a higher income;
  • Use the Internet and email;
  • Vote, volunteer, and access information about current local and national events.
  • Unfortunately, only a fraction of low literate adults seek literacy services from community providers. Many people with low literacy do not perceive their skills as a problem until a crisis such as the loss of a job, a child’s need for help with school, or a health care emergency makes them aware of their literacy needs.”

    What do think?

    I would love to hear your thoughts about adult education and family literacy. Email me at gedwithgina@hotmail.com.
