Dr. Marvin J. Cetron
President, Forecasting International, Ltd.
Dr. Cetron, the founder and president of Forecasting International, in Falls Church, VA, is one of the foremost forecaster-futurists in the world. A pioneer in corporate, industrial, demographic, and lifestyle forecasting, he has consulted for more than 350 of the Fortune 500 companies, 200 professional and academic associations, 17 foreign governments, and many branches of the U.S. government. He has been a consultant to the White House in every Administration, both Republican and Democrat, from the time of John Kennedy through Bill Clinton’s tenure.
Dr. Cetron has written numerous publications, including three dozen books. His most popular works are Encounters with the Future: A Forecast of Life Into the 21st Century (McGraw-Hill), American Renaissance: Our Life at the Turn of the 21st Century, and Crystal Globe: The Have and the Have-Nots of the New World Order (both by St. Martin’s Press). These books have sold as many as 140,000 copies, in hardcover and trade paperback.
Cetron worked for the Navy Department for 20 years, from 1952 to 1971. Most of his career was spent with the Naval Material Command, where he was responsible for the Navy’s technological forecasting capability. One of his duties was the development, generation, and publication of the most comprehensive technological forecast ever performed in the free world.
In 1994, the Pentagon’s Office of Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict chose Dr. Cetron to head a study of future terrorism. Called Terror 2000, this work has proved to be one of the most astonishingly prescient studies of terrorism ever carried out. It predicted the rise of a new brand of terrorist war, aimed not at gaining political advantage, but at cultural annihilation, which would be carried out by religious and ethnic fanatics, rather than by governments.
Specific forecasts in this report included a bombing in the American heartland, which would be perpetrated by Americans with ties to the militia movement and a grudge against the government- this two years before the Oklahoma City bombing- and a second, much more serious attack by Muslim extremists against the World Trade Center. A third prediction, that terrorists would use a hijacked airplane to strike at the Pentagon, was removed at the insistence of the State Department.
Dr. Cetron has appeared regularly on every major television network, and in countless magazines and newspapers. He has often been interviewed on “Today,” “Good Morning America,” “CBS Morning News,” “CNN Newsmaker Sunday,” “Crossfire,” and “Larry King Live.”
Dr. Marvin Cetron holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Penn State, a Master’s degree in Production Management from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Research & Development from American University.
