Potential new bus line in 2013: Fuquay-Raleigh

The Triangle Transit Board of Trustees recently approved an update to the Triangle Transit Short Range Transit Plan (SRTP).  Several improvements to the region’s bus transit system could benefit Wake Tech students and employees; the most notable is a proposed new route from Fuquay-Varina to Raleigh beginning in 2013, which would include Wake Tech’s Main Campus on its list of stops.

To see this update, see http://www.triangletransit.org/srtp.

Have you ridden the R-Line in downtown Raleigh?

Welcome Students!

Welcome to all our new and returning students!

Finding your way around campus and getting to class on time is tough enough without transportation and parking headaches. Here are a few tips to make your life at Wake Tech a little easier:

  • Plan to arrive EARLY. Be on campus 20 to 30 minutes ahead of your first class — 45 minutes, if you’re not quite sure where you’re going yet!   There’s no wasted time when you’re early…you can always study for the quiz, review the chapter, touch up the homework assignment.
  • Investigate public transit. If you can take the bus, do it!  Remember the CAT 40E line to main campus is free, with your ID.  No parking hassles, no gas money necessary.
  • CARPOOL. If you drive to campus, save money and reduce parking congestion by carpooling.  Talk with fellow students and find out if you can share a ride, even if it’s only for part of the trip.  Check for potential rideshare matches at www.sharetheridenc.com.  Find locations for park-and-ride carpool lots at www.gotriangle.org. And if you can provide reliable transportation for someone else, offer to give others a ride in return for a contribution toward the cost of gas!
  • Park smart. The best parking spot is probably the one you can get into and out of quickly, not necessarily the one that’s closest to your classroom.  Learn which parking spaces fill up most quickly. Be sure you’re parking in the right area, and be prepared to get some exercise by walking.  Keep an umbrella and plastic bag in your backpack, for those sudden showers.

Use Google Maps to find public transit

Confused about bus routes?  There’s a simple solution:  Google Maps.

All Triangle transit routes and schedules are coordinated within Google Maps! Here’s how to use this excellent feature:

  1. Go to Google, choose Maps and click on Get Directions.
  2. Choose your mode:  Select By Public Transit (the bus icon) instead of the default mode By Car.   Additional selection fields will pop up so you can enter the date and time — this coordinates the maps application with transit schedule information.
  3. Enter your starting point, your destination, and your time of departure, click on Get Directions, and voilá! You’ll have instant directions, with all the info you need to find the right bus and a stop close to your destination.

You can also use the Public Transit mode to coordinate longer trips, which might include an Amtrak train, another city’s transit system, or a long-distance coach bus such as Greyhound.

Carpool!

Share expenses, make friends, reduce traffic congestion and help cut air pollution.  Carpool!

Have you visited GoTriangle’s online rideshare matching program? It connects carpool passengers needing a ride with carpool drivers who would like a little help with gas money.  Passengers are looking for drivers for all routes … and passengers are looking for rides to campus and work. Enter your route and schedule info, check out the available matches, and make new friends!  www.sharetheridenc.org

Do you know how much money you’d save with a carpool partner? Check out this calculator:  http://www.gotriangle.org/go-info/commute-savings-calculator/

P.S.  We’ll have additional news soon about carpooling for Wake Tech…check back in a week or two.
