RALEIGH, N.C. (October 12, 2012) - “North Carolina is making progress, but there is much more work to do!” Governor Beverly Perdue visited Wake Tech’s Public Safety Education Campus today to announce findings from a new report on the status of women in North Carolina.

The report shows that women have made gains in healthcare, jobs, and education. “Education is an important form of protection against poverty – not only for a wage-earning parent, but also for her children,” Gov. Perdue said. “Economic instability for women casts a long shadow, but our push to make education and job-ready training more affordable and accessible is helping to turn the tide.”

Governor Perdue made the announcement in a classroom that is used to train students in Wake Tech’s Certified Nursing Assistant program, which introduces basic nursing skills for work in a variety of healthcare settings. “Programs like the CNA course at Wake Tech that teach job-ready skills are basic good sense for economic security,” said Perdue.

Governor Perdue said some of the findings indicate there is room for improvement. According to the study, women are more likely than men to live below the federal poverty line, and statewide, women on average earn only 83 cents for every dollar earned by men. The 2012 Status of Women in North Carolina report is coordinated by the N.C. Council for Women. For more information on the report, visit
